SPAIN- CHIPIONA
CEIP MAESTRO MANUEL APARCERO
Our school
is located by the Atlantic Ocean near the mouth of the Guadalquivir River in
the province of Cadiz.
Many of our
students come from families which are engaged in fishing and agriculture and have
very low incomes. Many of the family
members have been unemployed for years. The area from which the students come
is a disadvantaged area with many special educational needs pupils, many with
low incomes and a growing number of immigrant students. We want to provide
better access to learning opportunities for these students with special
educational needs.
We are
concerned about the situation of those students for whom language and cultural
differences exist between home and school, combined with the lack of
socioeconomic resources and further compounded by factors such as language
barriers, low expectations, inadequate family and community support, and the
lack of appropriate social models.
In our
school we have many active programs, but we must continue to promote measures
to ensure the quality of educational performance of our students.
Despite
having the ocean nearby, the students do not appreciate it as they should. It is necessary to work on this project, with
the sea as the main protagonist in order to teach future generations to move
into the employment sector and find other socio-economic elements that can
generate employment: i.e. the sea as a source of wealth.
Likewise,
by living in a tourist town it is necessary to emphasize the learning of English
as a second language and to create a true European awareness among future
generations.
