SZKOŁA PODSTAWOWA NR 1 IM. JÓZEFA WYBICKIEGO
Our school, Szkoła Podstawowa nr 1 im.Józefa Wybickiego, is an urban primary school in Rumia in the Pomorze region at the Baltic Sea. It is also the oldest school in our town with its 94- year- old traditions. Recently our school has been under renovation to improve learning conditions.
We teach children at the age of 5-12. In the learning process we focus on both gifted students  and those with learning disabilities. The social background of our students is  diverse. There are children who are brought up in both poor and middle-class families. Our school cooperates with local social assistance (MOPS), local church and our School Parents’ Council  to help students from  families with very low income. There are also children with pathological family background  and children in well-functioning families.  As for students with learning disabilities and social dysfunctions, our school provides speech therapy, pedagogical therapy and sociotherapy.

Currently we are working on projects promoting healthy lifestyle, environmentally friendly and non violence attitudes, family values, Internet and road safety behaviour as well as volunteer work. We also attempt to promote our regional ethnic traditions and language (Kashubia) strictly connected to the sea.

We would like to instill confidence and the idea of equal European opportunities especially in low-motivated students with little family support. We believe that joining the Comenius project will strengthen and develop self motivation to life learning as well as show our students different approaches to consider the sea as a possible idea for  the living in different fields such as education, culture, tourism, employment, ecology and sport.  The project will make us learn more about the Baltic and other European seas. We intend to  promote ecologically friendly attitude towards the sea, develop ICT and second language skills as well as increase European awareness in our local community. We think that participation in this project is a possibility for  students and teachers to make learning and teaching more fascinating and attractive with possibilities to share experiences and develop cooperation with other  European schools. It is also the way to overcome socioeconomic and language barriers in order to develop our own European identity.
